Railways have recorded the death of a passenger in an accident after 34 months. 12 bogies of Bikaner-Guwahati Express derailed at Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. At least 7 passengers are reported to have died in this accident. More than 50 passengers are said to be injured. The last time a death in a train accident was registered was on March 22, 2019.

Railways has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh for the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for the passengers with normal injuries.

Guwahati-Bikaner Express 15633 (UP) originating from Bikaner in Rajasthan derailed near Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri district at around 5.15 pm on Thursday. This train was going to Guwahati in Assam via Patna. Maynaguri was not in the list of 34 stoppages of the train. According to railway officials, 4 out of 12 coaches were completely damaged. According to sources, there were around 1,200 passengers on board the train.

In February last year, the then Railway Minister Piyush Goyal told the Rajya Sabha that since March 22, 2019, no passenger has lost his life in train accidents. Vaishnav also told the Rajya Sabha in July last year that no railway passenger died during 2019-20 and 2020-21. Prior to that, Railways had recorded 16 deaths in 2018-19. The achievement of zero deaths in 2019-20 was said to be the first such achievement in the 166-year history of Railways.
